Advent is Coming: Preparing Your Heart with Hope

As November draws to a close, the Church begins to turn her gaze to the coming of Advent, a season that brims with quiet expectation. Advent isn’t just a countdown to Christmas. It’s a time of profound hope, when we remember that Christ has come, is coming now into our hearts, and will come again in glory.
In a world often overshadowed by anxiety and distraction, Advent invites us to slow down, look up, and rekindle our trust in God’s promises. Here are a few ways you can prepare your heart, and your family, to receive the gift of hope this season.
Rediscover the Meaning of Waiting
Our culture tells us waiting is a nuisance. But in God’s plan, waiting is often where faith grows strongest. Mary waited nine months for the Savior’s birth. Generations of Israel waited centuries for the Messiah. We too are invited into this holy longing.
Instead of seeing Advent as four weeks of shopping and scheduling, see it as a time to lean into your desire for God. What are you yearning for? Where do you need His light most? Take time each day to sit with these questions in prayer.
Make Your Home an Advent Home
Small traditions can help your family live the hope of this season in concrete ways:
- Light the Advent wreath each night at dinner. Let the growing light remind you that darkness never has the last word.
- Display a nativity scene gradually, adding figures week by week as Christmas approaches.
- Create an Advent calendar of good deeds – simple acts of love and sacrifice that prepare your hearts to welcome Jesus.
These practices don’t need to be elaborate. Their power lies in their quiet consistency.
Return to Prayer and the Sacraments
The most important preparation happens not in decorations, but in the heart. Make space in your schedule for silence, reflection, and the sacraments. Consider:
- Going to confession before Christmas.
- Attending daily Mass once a week during Advent.
- Setting aside 10 minutes of Scripture reading each day.
When we show up to prayer with expectant faith, God meets us with His mercy and peace.
Hold Onto Hope in a Hurting World
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the brokenness around us. But Advent reminds us that no darkness can extinguish the light of Christ.
As St. Paul writes, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (Romans 12:12) This season is your invitation to trust again—to believe that God is still at work in your life and in the world.
A Prayer for Advent Hope
Mary, Mother of Fairest Love,
help us wait with joyful hearts.
Teach us to trust when life feels uncertain.
Kindle in us the hope that never disappoints,
so we may welcome your Son with love.
Amen.
This Advent, let your preparation be more than a checklist. Let it be a time of renewal, faith, and hope—a season when you and your family draw closer to the God who is always coming to meet you.
